Study of deposition of aerosols in the human lung

The aim of the project is modelling and calculation of dposition of aerosols in human lungs ranging from (premature) neonate till adult.

Deposition of aerosols is governed by:

1) impaction (larger particles can not follow a curved pipe and impact on the wall due to their mass).

2) sedimentation (gravitational force)

3) Brownian movements of particles

4) electrostatic forces

5) other effects like: hydrofobic/hydrophylic, thermic gradients, shape of particel (spherical or not)

A lot of medication for pulmonary diseases are given as an aerosol since the drug targets directly the place of interest and systemic (=whole body) effects can be avoided. It is known from literature that the amount of drug which deposits in the lung is very low (reaching from 20% for adults till 2% for young children).

A target is to study how lungdeposition of medication can be increased (especially for young children).
